Building a saltwater aquarium provides hours of fun while creating a relaxing showpiece for your home. Biotope aquariums focus on the replication of a reef and often reflect the fish and environment of a specific region. Researching and collecting the required fish, coral and plants can take your saltwater hobby to a new level.

From Quick Guide: Something Fishy
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the reef you would like to replicate in your biotope aquarium and consider the local fish and their availability. Many desirable species are difficult or illegal to purchase.

  2. Step 2

Start with fish that are common on all reef environments, such as parrotfish and clown fish. These fish adapt well to new tanks and changes in temperature and environment while your aquarium family grows.

  3. Step 3

Ask an expert for advice on compatibility between species and avoid predator fish if your tank is less than 180 gallons. Ensure fish have a comfortable and safe place to escape in the coral and plants you provide.

  4. Step 4

Select a good cleanup group to help maintain the tank. These species are hearty and found on all reefs so purchase the ones that will work best for your environment.

  5. Step 5

Stick to the theme of your reef and keep it as close to the natural environment you are targeting. An exception is when you simply can't find the exact fish you want in which case a close cousin from a related reef can fit in quite happily.

  6. Step 6

Target a very specific part of the reef to take things a step further. This often creates a more suitable and realistic environment but limits your selection of fish and coral.
