There are times when it pays great dividends for a business to hire a good copywriter. Copywriters write material such as general ads, marketing brochures and image/identity pieces for corporations and small businesses. Business letters and website copy are also written by copywriters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Specify exactly what you want when you hire a copywriter. One of the most frustrating things for a copywriter to deal with is vague information and instructions. When you contact a copywriter, state what you need and want in direct and simple terms. Copywriters must know who your target audience is. Obviously, writing for senior citizens is quite different than writing for teenagers. Give the copywriter a detailed description of the product or service you want to promote.

  2. Step 2

State the reason for your copywriting needs. Your business may be new and you simply want to get your name out in the public. You may have a new product invention you want to tell the world about. Let the copywriter know if you are trying to qualify prospects for your services. Of course, advertising copy differs greatly from technical documentations you may need. Allow the copywriter to ask questions until you are both satisfied that what you want is clear.

  3. Step 3

Provide as much background material as possible when you hire a copywriter. Testimonials about your product or service are useful for the copywriter. Previous ads you may have run, product manuals or brochures and any information on competitors in your market may be invaluable when a copywriter works to produce the copy you need.

  4. Step 4

Hire a copywriter by finding out their experience level. New copywriters may work cheaper than experienced ones. As in any business, they "pay their dues" by working for less and getting valuable on-the-job training. The more experienced and skillful the copywriter is, the more you may pay for her services. Some copywriters charge by the hour. Some charge by the project.
