How to Work for an Entrepreneur

Working for an entrepreneur can be very different from working for a large corporation or business. Entrepreneurs take their position much more seriously as they have much more to lose. This doesn't have to be a negative thing however, as entrepreneurs are driven people who work very hard to make their business succeed. They often help those on the ground floor rise to success with them and their company. Follow these guidelines when working with an entrepreneur.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the risks and rewards that the entrepreneur is working with day to day, and know the big picture. Company owners want the business to grow by leaps and bounds, and work hard to make it happen. Offsets can often cost a business owner time and money in a more direct way than a corporation.

  2. Step 2

Be willing to be more liberal with assigned duties and scheduling. Things with a small business are usually not as carved in stone as with their larger counterparts. Unusual tasks, such as repairs or construction, can be a huge help and money saver to an entrepreneur.

  3. Step 3

Assert yourself and your opinions more than you might in a corporation or factory. Since the entrepreneur you work for actually makes the major decisions, she may welcome your opinion even if your idea is not used or if it fails because it shows you think about the company's well being.

  4. Step 4

Know more than just your assigned job and duties. Knowing how to do more will be helpful to your boss and it will help you gain valuable experience, whether you move on to other things or grow with the company.

  5. Step 5

Treat customers with respect and friendliness. Treating them as guests and making them feel welcome is likely a number one priority to your boss, and he will be glad that you feel the same way he does about this.

  6. Step 6

Appreciate better seeing the ins and outs of business than you could ever see working for a faceless corporation. See how your employer handles day-to-day transactions, and see the pride she has in dealing with her work as an entrepreneur.
