How to Expand a Business

Expand a Business

When a business has the potential to provide more of its product and service and bring in more profit, it's time to expand that business. It is possible to expand a business too quickly, however. To keep this from happening, the business should grow at a controlled, reasonable pace. Expanding too quickly could drive away customers because you are overwhelmed and unable to deliver items when promised. Expand responsibly with these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase the business' capacity to produce the product or service. This will involve an assessment of what equipment and how much money will be needed to expand the business.

    • 2

Get any equipment you will need to handle the extra amount of business. Make sure to have the equipment in place before you promise additional products to customers. Once you have the equipment ready, you can continue to ready the business for expansion.

    • 3

Assess whether the current number of employees can handle the new business load. If they can't, hire enough employees to handle the new numbers. If it's questionable, hire an employee or two on a temporary basis. A temp agency can assist you with finding temporary employees until you decide how many new employees are needed.

Look for larger premises if needed. Though the business is set to grow, the walls themselves can't grow. If you can add on to the current building you will likely save on moving costs. If the expansion is extreme, however, a completely different type of building may be needed.
