The frame encasing your artwork is just as important as the artwork itself. Frames have two roles. A good frame both compliments the artwork and preserves its value. It's important to keep these two things in mind when you purchase materials for mattes and backings. Once you choose your materials, you must focus on the technique of framing. Follow these steps to frame your art.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Matte
  • Frame
  • Four paper or polyester folded corners
  1. Step 1

Measure your artwork to determine what size frame and matte you need. Your matte must always be wider than the frame, typically 4 inches on each side.

  2. Step 2

Go shopping for a matte and frame that is simple. Choose a color that isn't necessarily a color in the painting, but that complements the colors in the piece. Find a frame that highlights the artwork but doesn't take the focus away from the piece.

  3. Step 3

Unlatch the backing of the frame and take out the glass. Clean the glass with glass cleaner and let it air dry completely. Set the glass back into the frame.

  4. Step 4

Place your matte color side down on top of the glass.

  5. Step 5

Attach the four paper or polyester folded corners onto the backing of the frame with a small nail and hammer. Slip the corners of the artwork into the folded corners one at a time.

  6. Step 6

Place the backing, artwork side down on top of the matte. Fasten the backing securely to the frame.

  7. Step 7

Find the perfect spot to hang your artwork for everyone to enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Measure the depth of your artwork if it's on a canvas so that your frame is deep enough to house it.
  • Use archival quality framing materials or other acid-free containing materials that won't break down your artwork.
  • Choose a frame glass that has a UV protective coating to avoid sun damage to your artwork.
