How to Find Backpacker Jobs in Australia

One of the many benefits of traveling to Australia is that you can work while you backpack across the country. Australia is not just a country, it's also a continent. So backpacking across it can take some time. Working as you backpack can allow you to really take your time exploring Australia, without breaking your backpacker's budget.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange for an Australian Working Holiday Visa. It allows you to work and travel in Australia. You can apply online through the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship or by downloading and mailing an application.

    • 2

Decide what types of work you want to do and what you are qualified for. Common backpacker jobs include fruit picking and packing, nursing, administrative and clerical work and working in hostels. Online sites like Backpackerboard.co.nz give you job links to help you find resources.

    • 3

Use the Internet to contact recruitment agencies and investigate jobs. Sites like Budget Travel in Queensland, Australia, offer tips for backpackers on everything from going rates to setting up bank accounts.

    • 4

Check for job notices when you first arrive at a new destination. You can check the local hostels for job boards. Also check local bars and restaurants to see if they need help. Ask about local festivals and events that might need help.

    • 5

Ask the people you meet as you travel about job opportunities. Fellow backpackers often have tips they can share with you.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can only have one Working Holiday Visa in your lifetime, so only apply for this type of visa if you want to work during your vacation. After that, you'll be restricted to a regular Tourist Visa.
