How to Create an Islamic Home

The Arabic word, "Islam," means "submission" and to that extent, creating an Islamic home is in keeping with submission to the prophet Muhammad and the words revealed to him by Allah in the Quran. Take steps to make your home a sanctuary for the worship of Allah.

  1. Step 1

    Maintain an organized home, free from clutter. Provide a place of worship where you and your family may recite your prayers five times a day. While a separate room is nice, if the space isn't available, designate an area of prayer, respected by all.

  2. Step 2

    Decorate a room where guests are entertained and display your most treasured possessions here. Carved statuary and architectural arches incorporated into wall hangings and fireplaces creates the proper atmosphere.

  3. Step 3

    Serve vegetables as part of your daily menu. Olives are blessings and squash strengthens the heart, according to the Quran. Follow kosher rules when preparing food. If Muslim markets are not available, purchase food from Jewish grocery stores.

  4. Step 4

    Observe Muslim holidays and take part in the holy celebration of Ramadan. Teach your children early that adherence to the laws of the Quran provides provide them with a solid foundation for becoming responsible adults.

  5. Step 5

    Live a life of simplicity and do not focus on materialism or subject your children to the temptations that come with materialism. Put Allah first in your home and share the stories of Islamic ancestors.

  6. Step 6

    Join with the Muslim community in your area. It's important to associate with others who share the belief of Islam in order to provide a support system for all members of the family.

  7. Step 7

    Consider educating your children at home to provide them with a Muslim learning environment. Network with other Muslim home schoolers in your community so your children can socialize and make friends. Contact your state board of education in order to follow the regulations in place for home schooling.
