How to Calculate Baseball Stats

In addition to being a sport played on a field, baseball is very much a numbers game. A lot of people enjoy poring over individual baseball stats to determine a player's worth. Many baseball stats consist of percentages and ratios, and here are some--both offensive and pitching stats--that you can calculate yourself.

Instructions

  1. Offensive stats

    • 1

Figure out a player's batting average by dividing the number of hits he has by the number of at bats. Batting average is written as a decimal point followed by three numbers. For example, a player who has 95 hits in 355 at bats has a .271 batting average.

    • 2

Calculate on-base percentage by adding the number of hits, walks and hit by pitch. Then, add the number of at bats, walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies. Then, divide the first number by the second number to get the on-base percentage.

    • 3

Determine a player's slugging percentage by dividing the total bases by at bats. If you need to figure out the total bases, multiply two by the number of doubles, three by the number of triples and four by the number of home runs. Then, add the singles to all three numbers for the total bases.

    Pitching stats

    • 4

Determine a pitcher's earned run average by dividing the number of earned runs a pitcher has allowed by the number innings pitched. Then, multiply that number by nine. ERA is figured to two decimal points.

    • 5

Calculate a pitcher's walks and hits per innings pitched, commonly referred to as WHIP, by adding the number of hits and walks the pitcher has allowed and dividing it by the number of innings she has pitched. A WHIP under one is considered a very good WHIP.

    • 6

Figure out a pitcher's strikeouts per nine innings by dividing the pitcher's number of strikeouts by the number of innings pitched and multiplying that number by nine.
