How to Attract Visitors to a Website

Setting up your website is only the first step in growing a successful online business. Once your site is built, you need to attract visitors to the site in order to make sales and build a customer base. You can have the best designed website, but if no one can find it on the vast Internet, your business is sure to fail.

Instructions

    • 1

Register your website with the online search engines. Some of the major search engines include Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN. When registering your site you are allowed to include a 25-word description of your site. These 25 words should be carefully written to include the top keywords that customers would search for when looking for a site that sells what you offer. Use an online keyword tracker to make sure you are picking the best words for your description.

Provide quality, useful, industry-related information on your website to encourage visitors to come and to return again. A good way to do this is by writing some informative articles and hosting them on your site. Change the articles periodically so visitors come back to read the new information.

    • 3

Offer something for free. People are always searching the Internet for free things. If you can afford to give away an actual item that is mailed to customers, this is one good way to get visitors to your site and to entice them to sign up for your mailing list. If you can not afford a physical give away, consider giving away digital items that can be downloaded such as games, music or e-books; or give them a coupon to use when shopping at your website.

Look for complimentary websites that are not competitive with your business and ask the website owner to participate in reciprocal links or banner exchange. This means you put a link or a banner ad on your website that sends your visitors to their site, and they do the same in exchange. For example, if you sell maternity clothing, approach owners of websites that sell baby clothing.

Purchase a banner ad on another website if the owner is not interested in participating in an advertising exchange. If you are going to pay for a banner ad, make sure you choose a website with high traffic that attracts the type of customer that would be interested in what you have to sell.
