How to Succeed in Small Business and Still Have a Life

Owning your own small business is many people's idea of a dream come true -- finally you are your own boss. However, for many this means you have little time off. The allure of pouring every second of your day into your business is hard to avoid. However, there are ways to find success with your small business while maintaining a social life.

1. Put yourself on a time budget every day. It's understandable that a regular 40-hour work week does not apply to your case. However, make a start and stop time every day and stick to it. Don't think about work after the day is through. Many business owners find this the hardest aspect. But get yourself into a routine and resuscitate your social life.
2. Hire some help. While your company might be on a shoestring budget that you think is only big enough for you, a helper can open up extra time and possibly increase revenue by streamlining your processes. Take a look at your finances and see if you can budget for assistance.
3. Incorporate friends and family into work. This doesn't mean to force loved ones into free labor, but to get creative with your time. Take a lunch break with a seldom-seen friend, or if your business requires you to travel around town make time to pop in for a visit with a family member.
4. Work with friends if possible. If you are fortunate enough to have a staff and friends who share your business interests, it can be a great experience to work with someone you like every day.
5. Force yourself to go on vacation. Since you are your own boss, you don't have to figure out yearly vacation time so purchase a vacation and force yourself to go. Distance from work will give you perspective and hopefully cool your nerves.
