One of the great benefits of a laptop is the ability to access the Internet wherever you want through a WiFi connection. However, there are occasions where the WiFi signal isn't strong enough and you need to access the Internet pronto. General Package Radio Services (GPRS) on your cell phone handset may be your answer. The steps below show you how to access the Internet on a laptop using a GPRS enabled handset.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Laptop
  • Cell phone handset
  • USB data cable
Step1
Purchase a GPRS enabled handset from your cell phone provider. Be sure to active the GPRS function through your cell phone provider as well.
Step2
Connect your cell phone handset to your laptop with a USB equipped data cable or bluetooth connection. Activate the GPRS Internet connection on the phone.
Step3
Start the process using your laptop control panel to establish a dial-up connection under Internet Options and the Connections Tab. Click on the "Setup" button and the connection wizard will guide you through the process.
Step4
Select your handset as the modem you want to use for your connection when that option arises. Step two should allow your laptop to recognize your handset as a modem option.
Step5
Enter *99***2# in the box that asks for a dial up number. Leave the name and password fields blank. Click "Finish" in the connection wizard and you should now have an Internet connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the number indicated in Step 5 won't work, try
  • 99# or
  • 99
  • 1# instead.
