How to Publish a Scientific Paper

Years of scientific research and testing have gone into your scientific paper and now it's time to publish your work. Journals have been the standard form of publication for decades and continue to be the standard option however, electronic alternatives now exist and may be preferred. The principals for getting your scientific paper published remain the same whichever avenue you choose.

1. Publish your completed works now or release your ongoing work as articles based on your chapters. Getting your scientific paper out quickly allows you to continue research without the cloud of unpublished work hanging over your head.

2. Submit your completed work in a single publication process whenever possible. Breaking larger articles up over multiple smaller articles creates more work.

3. Seek advice from a publisher with experience and carefully decide on which publication fits your scientific paper best. Consider the prestige of the publishers within the field of your work and always submit to the more recognized journals first.

4. Follow the publishers instructions carefully, format in the style found at the back of the publishing journal. Send the correct number of requested copies in the hard copy or electronic format the journal requests. Include all of the information the journal asks for in the cover letter.

5. Review the paper carefully for length, references and organization. Ensure your findings are clear and accurate and that all supporting tables are necessary. Have a colleague read your work and offer their opinion.

6. Resubmit your work if allowed and follow the editors advice carefully. Follow all directions and always proof as carefully as your initial submission.
