Reading fluency measures a person's ability to understand and enjoy the written word. The best way to improve reading fluency is simply to read more often. To get kids to read on their own, it's important to start reading to them early. It also helps if you keep plenty of good books within easy reach.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Fill your area or classroom with books, magazines and reading material on a variety of subjects, so that a reader is sure to find something interesting.
Step2
Make daily reading part of the routine. Incorporating reading into the daily routine makes it easier for kids to anticipate and enjoy storytime.
Step3
Use audio books so kids hear fluent reading. This way they can enjoy a story whenever they want, even if you're busy elsewhere.
Step4
Pair older kids with younger kids and have them take turns reading aloud to each other. Working with a peer is more fun than working with a parent or teacher, so younger readers benefit more. Older kids can also benefit from providing help and support to younger kids.
Step5
Keep a chart of the minutes a person reads each week and provide the reader with a special reward. Friendly competition is a strong motivation for many individuals, and giving students a tangible reward for hard work will help them stay motivated to improve their reading fluency.
Step6
Take advantage of flash cards to promote easy recognition of common words. Flash cards help kids memorize common words, which helps them feel more comfortable while they read.
