Plagiarism is when someone copies part of an author's written work to make it seem like their work without the original author's permission. Plagiarism is a big problem. Catching someone plagiarizing your work is sometimes impossible. Other times, with a some investigating, it is possible to catch the plagiarism.

Keep detailed records of the articles you write. It is especially important to keep track of the date you wrote the article and the date it was published.

Understand the true meaning of plagiarism. Generally, if someone plagiarizes your work, you will find large excerpts of your work in their work totally unaltered. Sometimes, the plagiarizing author will change a few words around to make the plagiarism harder to spot. Keep in mind that some basic phrases and short sentences may appear in other author's work.

Search the Internet for written works similar to yours. Sometimes, the titles of plagiarized works will be exactly the same as the title for your work.

Read anything that seems very similar to your written works. If you feel that the literature has been plagiarized, check it against the copy you have of yours.

Check the date of publication for the work. The publication date of the work will be after the publication date of your work if the literature was plagiarized.

Use a plagiarism detector to find any written works online that contain the same phrases as your work. Make sure that you check only uncommon phrases. See the resources section for a free online plagiarism detector.

Contact an attorney if you feel that your written work has been plagiarized. You may be able to take legal action to correct the problem, especially if your work was copyrighted.
