Step 1
Acquire the goods. This means that you'll have to get your hands on some high tech gear to actually make a demo and develop the practical skills that employers look for. Get a high-end computer with lots of RAM and hard drive space, along with a huge graphic card and some development tools.
-
Step 2
Educate yourself early. Don't wait for college to start learning about computer graphics and design. Odds are good that your local library or college has a few resources, and the Internet is swarming with them.
-
Step 3
Narrow your field of interest. Once you've got the basics down, start looking at techniques that apply to one aspect of animation, such as character animation or lighting.
-
Step 4
Develop skills as an animator either through a rigorous self-study program or through a school. While self-discipline is necessary for self-study, it can provide a more focused result on your goal. Schools often offer job placement aid. Choose wisely.
-
Step 5
Create a demo of your skills. Make sure it'll fit on a DVD and that you not only mail these out to prospective employers, but you keep a few handy for people you run into as well. If you've got the room, show developmental phases to give an idea of how well you do certain parts of animation.

Step 6
Apply to as many companies as might take you. Start with your preference for employment and pursue it earnestly, but getting into the industry in any way gets you far.
