Step 1
Find a line on parts for the make and model of your John Deere tractor. You can find parts for the two-cylinder model all over the Web, but some of the easiest places to get the parts you need are eBay Motors and Yesterday's Tractor Company. Yesterday's Tractor Company has a link to specific makes and models as well as a message board for asking questions to other John Deere tractor enthusiasts.

Step 2
Do a basic cleaning. Some solvent and a rag lets you see stuff that may be hiding. A basic surface cleaning gives you a better idea of where to start your tear down.
-
Step 3
Tear down your John Deere tractor. Tear down the engine to see what condition the case, rings and pistons are in and to determine what engine parts you need. Check the condition of cables, air filter assembly, brake assembly and charging system.
-
Step 4
Inspect the pedals, steering and control levers. Be sure to clean rods and replace any broken or rusty pins holding those rods together.

Step 5
Polish and paint your John Deere tractor. After you complete all the mechanical work, polish her up and take her to the paint shop. She'll look so good in a fresh coat of John Deere green.
