How to Fix Windows Registry Errors with a PC Registry Cleaner

The Windows registry stores operational information for your computer. Whenever you make a change to the control panel, system settings or installed software, the registry saves the change and remembers it for future use. Unfortunately, the registry is also the main target of most malware, such as viruses and spyware. To clean it up and keep your PC running smoothly, run a registry cleaner every now and then.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read online reviews of the different registry cleaners and see which one is right for you. The good ones aren't free, so it's a good idea to take your time when evaluating their features and user interfaces.

  2. Step 2

Download and install the registry cleaner of your choice. Some are available from third-party download sites (see Resources below), but most are available on their developers' home pages.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the registry cleaner you've installed works with your version of Windows before running it. Earlier utilities often have compatibility issues with Vista.

  4. Step 4

Launch the registry cleaner and conduct a full scan of your computer. This sweeps the entire registry and repairs any errors the program finds.

  5. Step 5

Maintain your PC's health with regular registry sweeps. If your registry cleaner gives you a choice, conduct a quick scan instead of a full registry scan for each of these check-ups.

Tips & Warnings
  • Download the trial version of your registry cleaner before purchasing the full version. You'll get a feel for how it works and how comfortable it is to use.
