Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the official site of the Educational Testing Service for location and dates of the iBT. You can purchase a package of test preparation materials, which include sample essays (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Study the eight types of questions you could encounter: agree/disagree, choice/preference, compare/contrast, good/ad, if/what, what/how, why, describe. Learn how to respond to each type of question (see Resources).

  3. Step 3

Examine sample essays. Notice how the writer organizes his essay in sample responses to the question asked (see Resources).

  4. Step 4

Develop a quick way to gather ideas, such as brainstorming with lists, mapping with trees or using a simple outlining technique. Organize your thoughts into a main idea with supporting arguments.

  5. Step 5

Practice writing sample essays using a timer set to 30 minutes. Spend the first 10 minutes organizing your thoughts. Write your essay; then proofread and revise.

  6. Step 6

Work with a tutor familiar with the TOEFL essay. She can help you with organization techniques, grammar, vocabulary and basic writing skills.
