Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Crowbar and sledgehammer
- Hammer and chisel
- Plumber's dope and caulk
-
Step 1
Measure the space for your new small bathtub. Determine whether you need a corner model or a flush model, depending on the location of your plumbing.
-
Step 2
Consider putting the new bathtub into a space already prepared for plumbing. Small bathtubs fit well into spaces where a stall-type shower exists.
-
Step 3
Remove the old bathtub or shower stall with a crowbar and sledgehammer. If you're removing a bathtub, simply cut out the caulking with a utility knife and use the crowbar to pry it free from the walls. Make sure to remove faucet handles, faucets and drain covers before removal. For stall-type showers, remove old tile with a hammer and chisel and then pull out the stall base. Again, remove all faucets, handles and drain coverings before demolition.
-
Step 4
Prepare the area for the new tub according to installation directions. This is where you may need an experienced plumber to be sure all the fittings are in the right place for your new installation. Seal connections between water sources and new pipes with plumber's dope to ensure a tight seal.
-
Step 5
Caulk around the edge where the tub meets the wall and floor with all-purpose plumber's caulk for a watertight finish.
