How to Do Mold Removal and Prevention

Mold can thrive in moist warm areas in your home. If you allow mold to grow in your home, it can be hazardous to your health, therefore, it is important to locate and eliminate any mold problems. You can do mold removal and prevention by following these guidelines.

Mold Prevention

Step1
Prevent mold growth by fixing the cause of any moisture problems. Repair roof and plumbing leaks immediately and be sure to dry any wet items within 48 hours to reduce the chance of mold growth. Insulate any water pipes that are visibly damp.
Step2
Reduce excess humidity in the home by using air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Install a humidity meter to measure relative humidity. The relative humidity should be below 50 percent.
Step3
Use exhaust fans or venting systems in kitchens or laundry rooms to reduce excess humidity in these areas and make sure they are working properly.
Step4
Open windows and doors to circulate the air. Install fans for closets or attics. These areas are usually poorly ventilated.
Step5
Keep bathrooms, closets and basements clean and free of mildew or musty odors. These are potential indicators of mold growth.
Step6
Dry any wet surfaces on windows, walls and pipes if there is condensation or moisture on them.
Step7
Avoid installing carpeting in areas of the home that are prone to dampness.

Mold Removal

Step1
Use protective equipment such as goggles, masks, rubber gloves and disposable clothing when doing mold removal. You may be able to remove mold in a small areas yourself. But for big areas or very severe mold problems, you may need professional mold removal services (see Resources).
Step2
Clean mildew or mold on items such as clothing with soap and water, then allow them to air dry in the sun. For persistent stains, use some chlorine bleach and water and place the items in this solution. Avoid using bleach on delicate material so read the garment label for cleaning instructions.
Step3
Discard items such as carpets or ceiling tiles if the mold problem is severe. You can clean some carpets by using a shampoo machine or getting it professionally cleaned.
Step4
Scrub mold off surfaces such as hard plastic, concrete, glass, metal or solid woods with detergent and water and let them dry thoroughly. Follow this procedure by disinfecting the items with a solution of bleach and water. Allow the items to dry thoroughly.

Clean papers, books, furniture, upholstery or mattresses by using similar techniques (see Resources).
Step6
Remove water from floors and hard surfaces with a wet vacuum in a mold infected area. Be sure to thoroughly clean the vacuum afterwards to avoid contamination. Use a HEPA vacuum for the final cleanup of the area. Throw away the filter and content of the HEPA vacuum.
Step7
Dispose of all the unsalvageable items and equipment used in plastic bags to prevent more contamination. Following these guidelines to do mold removal and prevention can help safeguard your home against further mold problems.
