Things You'll Need:
- Tissue paper
- Glue
- Tape
- White paper
- String or yarn
- Colored pencils
- Matchbox
- Small item that will act as a weight
- Scissors
- Newspaper (to protect work surface)
-
Step 1
Remove the drawer from the matchbox, and draw a line all the way around the matchbox, tracing its shape onto the white paper as you make the air toy, a parachute. Without lifting the matchbox from the paper, upend it so that the end lines up with one side of the traced matchbox.
-
Step 2
Draw around the end of the matchbox, then turn it over without lifting it so that you can draw around the match box again, making sure the edge of one side lines up with the shape you traced before. Upend the box again, and draw around the edge. You will have two wide boxes with two narrower boxes on either side.
-
Step 3
Cut all the way around the traced shape as you make the air toy, then fold along all of the lines that you have traced. Apply glue to the inside of the paper as you make the toy parachute, then wrap the paper around the matchbox.
-
Step 4
Decorate the paper-covered match box with color pencils, making any designs you like as you make a toy parachute.
-
Step 5
Fold the tissue paper in half on the diagonal. Open the tissue paper, then fold it again on the other diagonal so that the two folds make an "x" in the middle of the paper.
-
Step 6
Make four "ropes" for the parachute by cutting four equal lengths of thread or yarn. Fold ends of the ropes and tape them to the four corners of the tissue paper. Hold all of the strings up and make a knot near the upper of them, near the edges of the tissue paper, as you make a toy parachute.
-
Step 7
Hold all of the strings up and make a knot near the upper of them, near the edges of the tissue paper—as you make a toy parachute. Place the matchbox face down on the table, then make a small loop with the ends of the rope and tape it securely with as many pieces of tape you need.
-
Step 8
Put your weight in the drawer and slip the drawer back into the matchbox. Take your parachute, making sure to carry it gently, and drop it from a height and see how well it flies.
