The benefits of cross training have become so respected that the most serious, passionate elite athletes include many different disciplines and a variety of strength and cardio regimens in their routines. Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions call on all your skills in one match. The fighter who uses his head and the skills learned in various martial arts training, wrestling, aerobic and weight exercises wins the MMA fight.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get on a mat. Wrestlers spend most of their fighting on the floor, while many martial artists only get to the floor for a takedown. Get comfortable with grappling techniques on the floor.

  2. Step 2

Use your other martial arts tactics to get your opponent on the floor and get down there with him to keep grappling. Pin down the opponent with both your arms and your legs like they do in wrestling competitions.

  3. Step 3

Work to make your body lean. Sinewy, muscular fighters do better in wresting. If you have built up muscles with bodybuilding or have gotten a little soft from throwing or jabbing workouts in aikido or Judo, do more aerobic and quick toning floor exercises to give yourself more of a wrestler's body to compete in MMA contests.

  4. Step 4

Spend time in aerobic training where you will get your heart rate up. Running, rowing and jumping rope are all cross training activities used by elite wrestlers.

  5. Step 5

Join a wrestling club for a while. Train separately in each of the disciplines you want to bring to the MMA fight. Choose a gym or training center that offers a variety of classes and equipment so that you do all your cross training in one place, while learning to mix up and prepare to be the ultimate mixed martial artist.
