Whether it's because of an emergency or a sudden falling out, you may find yourself in need of a new best man for your wedding. Follow these suggestions to replace your best man at the last minute without adding any stress to your big day.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Promote one of your groomsmen to become your new best man. This way you'll still have one of your closest friends or relatives standing up for you, plus he'll already be familiar with the wedding plans and the order of the ceremony if you've already held the wedding rehearsal.

  2. Step 2

Tell the new best man that he can wear the same tuxedo. If your best man's tux was going to be different from the groomsmen's (such as having a white bow tie instead of black or a vest and coat that matched yours) abandon the plan or ask him to borrow those items from the original best man if they're roughly the same size.

  3. Step 3

Inform the new best man of his duties during the wedding. He'll typically hold the wedding rings during the ceremony, hold the money and pay the ceremony's officiate and witness and sign the wedding license.

  4. Step 4

Ask him to make a toast at the wedding reception. If he's nervous, let him confer with the previous best man to determine what he was going to say. You can also supply him with a few toast ideas or point him to a website with suggestions for appropriate speeches (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Select another friend or relative to fill in the groomsman spot vacated by your new best man. If there's no time to rent a tuxedo, either allow him to wear a nice suit or simply make do with one less groomsman. Simply have the last groomsman walk down the aisle with two bridesmaids instead of one.
