How to Make Foam Masks for Kids

Hold an impromptu masquerade ball with your kids after making fun foam masks for each of them to wear. The project is so easy and inexpensive, they'll be able to create and decorate several of the accessories to suit their mood and personality.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrap paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Foam sheets
  • Paint
  • Foam stamps
  • Paintbrushes
  • Stickers
  • Dimensional accents
  • Glue
  • Hole punch
  • Elastic cording
  • Blunt wood sticks
  1. Step 1

Cut a mask template by sketching a shape onto a piece of scrap paper and cutting it with scissors or a craft knife. The template will allow you to adjust the size and openings without wasting foam sheets. Ensure the mask's design won't impede your child's vision or breathing.

  2. Step 2

Trace the mask's shape onto a thin foam sheet, available in several colors at general craft stores. Cut it out with sharp scissors or consider using a craft knife if it's too hard to maneuver the scissors around the curves and openings.

  3. Step 3

Let the kids personalize the masks with paint, markers or foam stamps. Use glue to affix dimensional accents like feathers, gems, foam shapes, buttons and flowers around the outside of the mask.

  4. Step 4

Punch a hole on each end of the mask. Measure, cut and tie a piece of elastic cording to the mask to secure it to your child's head. Add a few extra inches in case you need to adjust the fit. If she'd rather not wear the mask, punch two holes on the same side and weave a blunt wood stick through them so she can hold the mask to her face instead (see Resources).

Tips & Warnings
  • Save time by purchasing foam mask kits featuring pre-cut pieces that you simply need to assemble. You'll be able to create more intricate designs in a lot less time (see Resources).
  • Turn scrap pieces of foam into stamps to apply paint to your masks. Create shapes by tracing a stencil or cookie cutter and trim with sharp scissors. Affix the shape to a wood block and apply a light coat of acrylic paint with a paintbrush.
