A flared skirt is created by sewing together many panels of fabric that are sewn together to form the skirt. This allows the skirt to sweep outward while still looking tailored. It is an easy skirt to accomplish since you are still sewing in straight lines so it is great for beginners who want more of a challenge.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a pattern of flared skirt. This will give you a pattern to follow when cutting out the fabric pieces. Cut out the pattern panels following the size lines provided on the pattern.

  2. Step 2

Weigh or pin the pattern sections on your fabric and cut out the pattern in the fabric. Make sure that the fabric panels of the skirt are going in the same direction.

  3. Step 3

Iron each section of the skirt to remove any wrinkles before sewing. Pin together the panels of the skirt. Sew together the panels of the skirt using the seam allowance indicated in the pattern. Iron the seams flat.

  4. Step 4

Pin and sew the waist band to the top edge of the skirt. Some patterns will require this and other will not. Refer to the pattern.

  5. Step 5

Pin and sew in a zipper. The pattern will indicated where this needs to be placed.

  6. Step 6

Measure and pin the bottom hem of the skirt. Make sure to check the hem by trying the skirt on before sewing it in place.

  7. Step 7

Sew the hem in place using the seam allowance indicated in the pattern. Iron all the skirt and seams in place to finish the skirt.
