Step 1
Choose a time period. Fashion changes widely from one decade to another, so you first have to pick what kind of look you want, and what's best suited for your body type. For example, "flapper" looks from the 1920s flatter a boyish figure, while clothes from the 1950s look best on curvier silhouettes.
-
Step 2
Go to the library. Old magazines are the best resources you can use to make you get your look exactly right. Look at copies of Vogue or other fashion publications to learn how to assemble a vintage outfit from your chosen decade.
-
Step 3
Find local thrift stores or vintage boutiques. You may be able to find looks from recent decades at traditional thrift shops. For older looks, check out your local business directory for stores specializing in retro clothing.
-
Step 4
Shop online. Many sites offer authentic vintage clothing, or less expensive replicas of vintage styles. The variety of clothing available is a benefit to online shopping; however, a big drawback is that you can't always be sure how the clothing will fit. Clothing sizes have not remained constant over the years, so be cautious of that when ordering online.
-
Step 5
Put it all together. You can choose to go all-out, or just put hints of vintage in your clothing and accessories. A simple ankle-strap heel will evoke the 1940s; putting it with an knee-length skirt and padded jacket will place you squarely in the decade. It's up to you to decide which vintage look is best for the occasion.
