How to Care for Cowboy Hats

The most important thing to remember about caring for a cowboy hat is to store it upside down when it's not on your head because storing it right side up causes the brim to become flat. You won't find a better storage container than the box it came in.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick up your hat only by the front or back of the brim, not by the crown. This prevents misshaped crowns and lets you pull the hat onto your head the easiest.

  2. Step 2

Store your cowboy hat with the original packaging materials in the original box, if possible. If you don't have a hat box, store it on a stand specifically made for hats or on a clean flat surface as a last resort.

  3. Step 3

Keep your hat away from heat when it's in storage. The band around the inside is made to absorb sweat and conform to the shape of your head. Heat will cause this band to shrink the hat.

  4. Step 4

Reshape your hat after you've worn it all day and especially if you've been in the rain. Turn down a wet sweatband and stand the hat on it until it's completely dry. You have to wait for the band to dry naturally because any attempts to dry it quickly cause the band to shrink.

  5. Step 5

Clean a fur felt hat with cornstarch and a soft brush. Clean a straw cowboy hat with a clean damp cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your cowboy hat becomes warped, a professional can use steam to restore it to its original shape.
