Step 1
Evaluate your undergarments. Properly fitting underwear is the key to looking great in clothes. At least once a year, measure yourself to make sure you're wearing the correct bra size. Most women go up or down a size or two in their lives. Companies like Spanx (see Resources) make foundation garments that are fun, easy to wear and functional.
-
Step 2
Show off your arms and shoulders if they're in great shape, but steer clear of too-short hemlines. Generally, skirts and shorts should hit just below the knee. And while a little cleavage can be sexy, keep tops modest and age appropriate with scoop necks and v-necks rather than plunging necklines.
-
Step 3
Keep jewelry and hair ornaments to a minimum. Splurge on some up-to-date costume jewelry. Long haired ladies can tame their tresses with fun, affordable hair accessories by companies like Goody (see Resources).
-
Step 4
Wear comfortable shoes that look as good as they feel. Tennis shoes need not be grubby. New Balance makes a line of sneakers that are understated and go with more than workout clothes. Since flats are back in style in a big way, you can have fantastic feet without teetering on stilettos.
-
Step 5
Put away those "mom" jeans. Don't worry--you don't have to dress like Britney Spears to look great in jeans. Retailers like Coldwater Creek (see Resources) carry flat front, boot-leg jeans with a slightly lower rise so you can wear stylish jeans without exposing your backside to the world.
