A makeover artist is more than just a cosmetologist who knows how to apply makeup correctly. A real makeover artist can look beyond the natural lines of a person's face and see what a client can look like in different shades and styles of makeup. You may want to hire a makeover artist for a friend or for yourself. Here are a few tips to hire a skilled makeup makeover artist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Host a couple of makeup parties to get some free makeovers from the women who sell the products. These women are trained in doing makeovers and you can get a free tryout and usually free products before you hire her for your special occasion.

  2. Step 2

Start small with somebody new before you hire the artist to give you a complete makeover. Maybe hire her to do your colors or suggest a lip color. After you get to know and trust her advice, you can spend the money to hire her for a complete makeover.

  3. Step 3

Visit the makeup counters in department stores to find a talented makeup artist. Watch the men and women apply makeup to other people at their stations to see if you like the approach and the style they are suggesting to their clients. Watch the finished product on a few customers and see if their looks are unique or cookie-cutter.

  4. Step 4

Ask your hairdresser for a referral. Hair stylists often work with partners to offer complete makeovers. You may need to make an appointment early for a special event.

  5. Step 5

Check online for a makeup artist. Most artists will have pictures of their work and a bio listed. Ask for a portfolio of any makeover artist you might hire. Call referrals if you still have any doubts about your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many younger women love MAC's cosmetic artists, especially women of color, because they offer all of their makeup in a wide variety of shades.
