Mopeds are small motor vehicles similar to motorcycles. Mopeds have two tires and normally hold one or two people. Mopeds require regular maintenance to run smoothly. Mopeds that are used daily need to receive maintenance on a regular basis.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check and change the oil. The oil on mopeds needs to be changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. The oil needs to be checked every 6 to 12 rides, depending on the length of the ride.

  2. Step 2

Check all of the other fluids on a weekly basis. Check the transmission oil and water levels. For best performance, keep the fluids full.

  3. Step 3

Look at the air filter once a month. If it is a little dirty, pull the air filter out and shake the dirt out. If the air filter is very dirty, replace it with a new filter.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the belts for wear every two to three months. If a belt is wearing, replace it before the belt wears through.

  5. Step 5

Take the spark plugs out and check them for rust or dirt. Clean the plugs with a wire brush but be careful not to damage the tip. If the tip gets damaged it may not work.

  6. Step 6

Wash the moped's engine and under its belly to remove any buildup or debris that might clog the air filter or engine.

  7. Step 7

Register and have the moped inspected if it is used on public streets. The inspection will also warn you of other maintenance the moped needs.
