Step 1
Enroll in a bail enforcement course. The laws regarding fugitive recovery vary widely from state to state, and sometimes from year to year. Find a course that is designed for residents of the state you plan to work in.
-
Step 2
Get licensed. Some states may allow you to skip this step, but in most parts of the country, you must be licensed to work as a fugitive recovery agent.
-
Step 3
Find a fugitive to recover. Each state has its own procedures for posting their bounties. One independent source for wanted criminals is the Fugitive Recovery Network, which has a listing of men and women currently being sought by law enforcement agencies.
-
Step 4
Track and capture the fugitive. Using your training and skills, locate the fugitive and turn him in to local police authorities.
-
Step 5
Establish a track record of excellence. As a fugitive recovery agent, you're wholly self-supporting, so whether or not you get work depends on your relationship with law enforcement officials. Officials want to work with bounty hunters who follow all laws and appropriate procedures while still getting the job done.
