How to Visit a Mosque

Visiting a mosque can be a profound experience, especially for those who feel deep appreciation for culture, religion and architecture. However, visiting a mosque is not as simple as walking in, snapping a few photos and going about your merry way. A few tips can help to make your visit to a mosque a positive experience for you as well as the worshipers within.

Instructions

    • 1

Remember that a mosque is a holy place and that the temple rules are written directly into the Holy Qur'an. Even if you don't live in accordance with the faith, you should know the basic guidelines and display respect for the religion.

    • 2

Plan your mosque visit during times when group prayers or sermons are not taking place. Because group worship is generally short, you can go to the mosque and wait outside if there are many people present. Additionally, you can get an idea for group prayer times by taking note of the prayer call which can be heard throughout most Islamic cities. Avoid visiting the mosque during the half hour following the call.

    • 3

Take children with you to visit a mosque only if they are old enough to understand and respect the rules. Children are expected to follow the same rules as adults.

    • 4

Dress appropriately when planning a mosque visit. Both men and women should wear clothing which covers the arms and legs. Women should wear dresses or skirts and cover their heads with scarves. Many larger mosques will provide scarves and robes if you do not have the appropriate clothing.

    • 5

Remove your shoes before you enter the mosque. Set them neatly outside the door alongside the other shoes. Step into the mosque with your right foot as you say, "Assalam-o-Alaikum" or "Peace be on you." From that point forward, you should remain in silence.

    • 6

Stay at the back of the mosque, walking behind any other people present. The front of the mosque is reserved for male worshipers. Do not simply walk around, snap a photo or two and leave, as it is considered mandatory to respect the mosque with prayer.

    • 7

Find a place to sit on the floor and take a moment for silent meditation or prayer. Afterwards, you are free to take a few photos if you like. However, do not photograph worshipers and do not use a flash. When you are ready to leave, step out with your left foot and gather your shoes. Do not remove your scarf until you are outside.
