If you are new to spray paint art, you'll find that there are many ways to add details to your images. Some will provide an outlet for the artist who enjoys drawing, while other methods will work better for those who prefer to stick to a can of spray paint and a stencil.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Board
  • Spray paint in different colors
  • Rags or newspapers
  • Card stock or light cardboard
  • Scissors or razor blade knife
  • Small hard plastic utensils such as clay carving tools
  • Small paint brushes
  • Clear coat enamel spray paint
  1. Step 1

Place your board on your work area, and use the many different colors of spray paint to create your basic painting.

  2. Step 2

Use wadded rags and newspapers to add texture to the colors on your paintings.

  3. Step 3

Cut out stencil shapes using card stock and the razor blade knife or scissors. Common shapes include fairies, animals and buildings. Make sure that you leave enough extra card stock around the cut out so that the card catches all of the over spray from your paint.

  4. Step 4

Paint the interior of these images whatever color you want. A popular method is to use them as silhouettes on your image, so you would paint them a dark color. If you are wanting them to be realistic, paint them the base background color of your object.

  5. Step 5

Use the hard plastic utensils to scratch through areas of the paint, down to the board underneath, to add white or black details to your painting.

  6. Step 6

Spray a small amount of paint onto the brushes and use them to add colored details to your image. Depending upon the color and consistency of the paint, you may need to let the painting thoroughly dry before adding any details.

  7. Step 7

Cover the entire surface of your painting with clear enamel to help protect your painting once it is dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spray paint is toxic. Only use it in a ventilated, preferably draft free, environment. Outside is a great place to paint.
