How to Set Tab Order for Form Fields in Adobe Acrobat

You can make your forms easy to fill out for visitors by setting the tab order of your Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional form. This process allows you to pick what order you want fields to become active when a user uses the "Tab" key to navigate the form.

      Open Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional and open an existing document from your files that contains form fields to which you would like to set the tab order.

      Choose the "Pages" button from the top of the navigation pane on the left side of the Acrobat screen. The navigation pane will then be displayed, showing you thumbnails of each page in your PDF file.

      Right-click on the first page of the form that contains the form fields to which you want to set the tab order. Choose "Page Properties" from the menu that pops up to open the "Page Properties" dialog box.

      Click the "Tab Order" tab, if necessary, and choose the "Unspecified" option. Click "OK" to close the "Page Properties" dialog box.

      Select "Edit Layout" from the Forms toolbar. If you don't see the "Edit Layout" button, click the "Preview" button. All the form fields should be highlighted in black, indicating that they are selected.

      Choose the "Forms" menu, point to "Edit Fields" and click on "Set Tab Order." Choose "No" from the dialog box that pops up. The form fields will now be marked with a number in a black box indicating the current tab order.

      Put your mouse into the first form field you want to have as the first tab and click. The number in the black box will turn to "1." Continue to click the form fields in the order that you want them to be tabbed.

  • To display the "Forms" toolbar, you can choose "View," point to "Toolbars" and click "Forms."
