Platform beds are a good project for beginning wood workers. They're easy to put together, and you can have the wood precut for you at a lumber yard or home improvement center. Make the platform larger than the size of your mattress as a handy surface for books or your alarm clock.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the mattress you want to use on your platform bed. Your platform bed should be anywhere from a few inches to a foot wider on three sides, depending upon your personal preference.

  2. Step 2

Build a frame of 2-by-4s that's slightly smaller than the size of the final platform bed you want to build.

  3. Step 3

Space 2-by-4s approximately every 4 to 6 inches to support the weight of the platform and provide a level sleeping surface for your mattress.

  4. Step 4

Attach heavy duty casters to the 2-by-4s in each corner. If your platform bed is oversized, add additional casters down the sides. Select casters that lock into place to prevent your bed from moving unexpectedly.

  5. Step 5

Create the platform for your bed by nailing plywood sheets in place over the top of the framework. The platform should be positioned so the overhang width is equal on the sides and the foot of the bed.

  6. Step 6

Paint or stain your platform bed. You can also choose to upholster the plywood sheets for a more unique look than the traditional wooden platform bed.
