How to Do Updos
An updo is a hair style in which the hair is pulled up on the head and styled. It can be as casual as a simple ponytail, or as involved as a head full of cascading curls and tendrils. No matter what type of updo you choose, some basic tips can make the job easier. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Wash your hair the day before you plan to style your hair in an updo, not on the same day. Freshly washed hair is very difficult to work with and won't hold a curl.
-
2
Brush and comb the hair thoroughly before you begin so that all tangles and snarls are removed.

-
3
Begin styling a basic updo by pulling your hair up and back in a smooth ponytail. Fasten the ponytail with an elastic band. Continue styling the updo from that point.
-
4
Use enough styling gel, hairspray or mousse to help hold the updo in place and to control any stray wisps.
-
5
Choose an updo that is appropriate for the occasion. Don't wear an elegant updo for a casual event or a simple ponytail for a prom or a wedding.
-
6
Consider your personality and choose an updo that you'll be comfortable with.

Tips & Warnings
Choose an updo on the nape of your neck rather than the top of your head if you have a long face.
Don't pull your hair back too severely if you want a soft, feminine look. Bangs, wisps or tendrils will help to keep an updo soft and feminine.
