There are many beautiful shade-loving flowers that add interest to a garden. Other varieties that like full sun in cooler climates need shade in hotter growing regions. Sometimes you realize flowers need more shade after they are planted. There are things you can do to create shade.

From Quick Guide: Planting Specialty Gardens
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use existing structures such as the house, property fence or shed. Plant flowers as a nice border along these structures so they get afternoon shade.

  2. Step 2

Consider planting in shaded areas between buildings if yours is a more urban setting.

  3. Step 3

Create a shaded oasis and plant under existing laths or beams.

  4. Step 4

Build new structures such as an arbor or gazebo to add shade to any yard. Trellises are another option that offer not only shade but privacy. Plant climbing vines, such as honeysuckle, for added shade.

  5. Step 5

Locate flowers in natural shade found under young and mature trees. Younger trees will provide light shade. Find full shade under the branches of mature trees with dense foliage.

  6. Step 6

Plant taller shrubs to give shade. If you love your new flowerbed but the flowers are looking wilted from the late afternoon sun, add a few shrubs behind to create natural shade.

  7. Step 7

Add new trees to your yard to create instant shade.
