Determine the size, shape and design of your brick fireplace. Search online to view some existing fireplace plans or you can create a design of your own.

Consider the size of your fireplace and calculate the square footage to determine how much brick you will need.

Locate a brick dealer who offers displays so you can get a better idea of how the brick will look when installed. Many materials, including brick, look considerably different in natural light and large quantities.

Purchase enough brick for your fireplace allowing a little extra. You will want to purchase enough fire brick for the interior lining of the firebox as well. This will allow better heating and keep your fire hotter for a longer period of time.

Level an area in your yard large enough for you new brick fireplace. Measure and place your forms for your concrete slab. Place the wire mesh inside the form area.

Pour your concrete slab in two sections to prevent cracking. Allow concrete to dry completely before building your fireplace.

Use your mortar and begin by laying the first course of brick on the slab. Continue to build your fireplace moving up to the second course using your level and brick hammer to keep the brick straight, square and plumb. Continue with this process with each row until you have finished your brick fireplace.
