Things You'll Need:
- Thinset
- Bucket
- Grout
- Grout float
- Trowel
- Gloves
- Grout sponge
- Cheesecloth
-
Step 1
Make thinset following the instructions on the back of the packet. Use a plastic bucket and industrial mixer to stir up the paste. This cement sand compound lets you attach the tile with a thinner layer of glue.
-
Step 2
Coat the tiling area with a thin balanced coat of mixed thin set by spreading it on with your trowel. The technique of scooping and smearing is one that takes a little practice to master. It is a good idea to wear gloves at this point.
-
Step 3
Attach tiles with a even amount of pressure to all four corners as you push it into the thinset. Be firm but not firm enough to squeeze the thinset into the area where the grout should be. Let dry following the curing time instructions on the back of the thinset packet.
-
Step 4
Mix tile grout following the instructions on the packet. The preferably surface is cement, fresh if possible. If this is not possible, avoid surfaces like dry wall sheet or plywood.
-
Step 5
Apply a layer of grout to the surface of the tiles forcing it into the gaps between the tiles using the float tool. Be sure to fill the gaps completely even if it seems you are making a big mess. A 45 degree angle works best. Wipe excess grout away.
-
Step 6
Use grout sponge to remove any excess grout from the tile surfaces. This is a good time to check for gaps in your grouting.
-
Step 7
Allow grout to dry and wipe off the tile surface with a dry cheesecloth to make it shine.
