Things You'll Need:
- Large washing machine
- Laundry detergent
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Hand needle
- Fabric hoop
- Denim patches
- Edging
-
Step 1
Wash the comforter to remove any stains that may have accumulated over time. Check for stains before drying. If the staining is bad enough, take it to a dry cleaners to be cleaned.
-
Step 2
Re-stitch any seams that may have pulled out over time. Do this with your sewing machine. If your sewing machine can't handle the thickness do it by hand. Stretch the material taunt in a fabric hoop and make small even stitches.
-
Step 3
Repair any tears in the fabric. You can loop stitch the tears together by hand or you can patch the tears with denim patches. If you have several tears, consider using bright patches to add a new look to your old comforter.
-
Step 4
Check for any weaknesses in your fabric. You may be better off adding a reinforcing patch now, while you have all the supplies on hand.
-
Step 5
Reinforce the edging on the comforter as needed. This comes off easily when dragged on the ground. You may buy new edging to apply to the whole comforter or simply re-stitch as needed.
