How to Build a Metal Storage Facility

Whether you want to house a few tools or your Lear jet, a metal storage facility is easy to build and provides inexpensive storage. Very small metal storage buildings come prefabricated, but others require some assembly. Unless the facility is extremely large, you and a few friends can raise the facility in a few days.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Prepare the site for your facility by pouring a concrete slab ahead of time. Concrete needs time to cure, so make sure it is stable before you begin constructing your storage building on top of it.
Step2
Bolt together the spans or arches that hold the weight of the building. Most kits come with only one size of bolt, to make construction easier. You normally use just your own awl and other tools.
Step3
Raise arches into place and secure together. As you work your way down the building, you and your crew will discover your favorite method for lining up the arches so that they match. Most residential storage facilities will not require heave machinery to lift the arches into place.
Step4
Install end doors and walls, making sure to add weather stripping.
Step5
Add extras such as window boxes, landscaping and the like or keep the project minimal. Either way, you have saved most of the cost of erecting a conventional building.

Tips & Warnings

  • Steel building manufacturers offer many models of metal storage facilities for home or commercial use. American Steel Span and Steel Master USA (see Additional Resources) sell standard and custom buildings.
