How to Build a Tudor House

The Tudor style of building hearkens back to the rich period of medieval times in England and has been often copied in the United States. You can find plans for Tudor-style homes in small cottage plans to mansions, but one thing they'll have in common is the use of stucco or plaster to give the Tudor home its distinct look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for plans that incorporate Tudor features, including a steep pitched roof and many gables, tall ornate chimneys and brick or stone accents.

    • 2

Budget more on a Tudor home than the average new home, because of the cost of stucco, cedar, and stick framing for the roof lines as well as narrow windows that often feature diamond accents.

    • 3

Recognize that a Tudor home will also require more upkeep. The traditional Tudor will need regular paint on the stucco and the cedar. Make sure that all exposed seams are caulked.

    • 4

Plan to spend more time on the building of your English-style home as well. Because of the complex roof lines, it will take more time to shingle. The exterior may take more time to build as well.

    • 5

Realize that you can achieve the Tudor look with brick or stone on the facade of the home. The addition of a steep roof and chimneys will help give it the English style. The more brick or stone that you add to the home will help you when it comes time to paint.
