Cosmetic surgery has boomed in the past few decades, and more and more people are deciding to undergo elective surgery. One new surgery is for the removal of age spots. Age spots, also called liver spots, are brown patches of skin that form as the result of sun exposure. These spots can be lightened or removed with laser surgery.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Weigh the issue. Age spots are not harmful. Even though they're caused by the sun, they're not cancerous and won't become cancerous. Age spots are a cosmetic concern, so think about whether they bother you enough to outweigh the risks of surgery.
Step2
Look for a doctor. It's best to seek out recommendations from friends who have had the procedure done. If none of your friends have had sun spots removed, look up cosmetic surgeons. Your regular doctor or dermatologist can also recommend someone.
Step3
Interview prospective doctors. You should talk with all of the surgeons you're considering. The best doctor for you is one you feel comfortable with, and one who provides you with the best information so that you can make a well-informed decision.
Step4
Figure out how you'll pay for the procedure. Insurance companies almost never cover elective cosmetic surgeries, so you'll have to pay out-of-pocket. Save money in advance, or work out a payment plan with your doctor.
Step5
Make time in your schedule. Removing age spots takes several treatments, spaced up to two months apart. Be sure that you can take time away from your job or other commitments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have reasonable expectations. Although surgery will fade the age spots considerably, some spots may never go away completely.
