Ironing a man's tailored shirt may seem difficult at first. All the creases and corners are a little more confusing than ironing a skirt, for example. With the right tools and a few easy secrets, you will become a professional in a short time.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ironing board set to a comfortable height
  • Steam iron filled with distilled water
  • Water bottle filled with distilled water
  • Plastic bag or large, clean towel
  1. Step 1

Wet the shirt with the plastic spray bottle and roll up in a towel or place in a plastic bag for about an hour. You can also iron a damp shirt from the washing machine. Make sure it is still not completely wet.

  2. Step 2

Set the temperature of the iron. A cotton shirt warrants a high setting. For blends and synthetic fabrics, set the temperature at medium and low. Check the label for special instructions. Iron dark fabrics inside out so they don't get shiny. Use the steam feature throughout.

  3. Step 3

Start with the collar and shoulders. Iron the outside of the collar and then fold at the natural crease and iron the front of the collar. Use just the tip of the iron. Place the shoulders around the tapered end and iron on both sides.

  4. Step 4

Turn the shirt inside out and iron the cuffs. Iron on the right side second. Next, iron the sleeves by laying on the board flat and ironing a natural crease.

  5. Step 5

Iron the rest of the shirt with a slow, pressured push of the iron. Iron the pocket first and then use the tip to iron between each of the buttons. Hang, fold or wear the shirt after it has fully cooled.
