How to Build Decorative Deck Railings

Choosing the right railings can make a big difference in your outdoor space. If you are looking for a more decorative approach you have several options to choose from. It is important that you find a deck railing that you are completely happy with, before you install it.

Wood saw
2x2 inch posts
Power drill/electric screwdriver
Carriage bolts
Stain
Paintbrush
Deck railing panels
Galvanized screws

Step1

Choose the style of decorative railing that you want. You can choose wrought iron decorative panels, baluster panels that have already been assembled ready for installation or you may choose a decorative style of individual balusters. Another option is to install wicket paneling over the existing railing.

Step2

Order the amount of railing you will need to fully enclose your deck. Make sure that the railing meets the code for the width and height of deck railings.

Step3

Cut your posts for the railing to the correct size--use 2x2 post material (or as directed by manufacture). Drill and measure two holes in the part that will attach to the side of the deck. The holes should be 1 1/2 inches from each side. The holes should be smaller than the carriage bolts. They are there to mark where to install the posts.

Step4

Begin by installing the posts for the railing. Use carriage bolts to attach the posts flush to the deck. Make sure that each post is the same height and installed level. Stain your posts to match your deck.

Step5

Install the deck railing panels. Screw the panels directly to the posts. Make sure that the panels are level.

Tips & Warnings

Using an extra person to hold the other end of the deck railing panel will make the installation process easier.
Leveling and measuring as you install each fence post will prevent mistakes and save you time later.
Wear goggles or protective eye wear when you use power tools.
