The Heel Side Rail Stand on a skateboard is one of the most basic tricks in freestyle skateboarding that skaters first need to master. It's very easy to learn but you have to practice in order to have good balance to do it well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin this trick from a stationary position. Place one of your feet at one of the edges of the board. In freestyle skateboarding the edge of the board is called the rail.

  2. Step 2

Position your other foot so that your foot hangs just a little off of the side of the board right above the truck. The truck is the hardware that the wheels and axle are attached to the skateboard with. The trucks are also used in many tricks.

  3. Step 3

Jump up a little while at the same time you press down on the rail of the skateboard. The pressure will make the board pop up and begin to tip over to the side. This trick is called a Heel Side Rail Stand because the part of the board on the top faces your heels.

  4. Step 4

Keep your body weight centered above the skateboard. Position the foot that was hanging over the rail in a way that it will land at the top of the wheel when the board tips on to its edge. Step toward the other wheel with your second foot while the board is tipping.

  5. Step 5

Put your foot on top of the wheel at the same time that the board lands on its side. The board must be very stable while it's on its rail. You've just made it into a Heel Side Rail Stand.
