How to Make Family Photo Magnets

Toddlers and young children may enjoy a new family project. Creating family magnets for your refrigerator is a great way to get your child to know all of your family members and to see the connection between their maternal and paternal family members. Family photo magnets will also be a good opportunity to help your child learn to spell family member's names. Follow these steps to make family photo magnets.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Search through photo albums for family photos of your immediate and extended family members. Have your children choose some pictures that they like best. Spend some time reminiscing about family memories and help your children learn about their ancestors and family members.

  2. Step 2

    Cut out the pictures so that the people are free standing. Have your children help you cut out their favorite pictures. You will then be able to glue each person on his or her own magnet.

  3. Step 3

    Glue each picture of each person on a magnet to put on the refrigerator. Use a hot glue gun or really strong glue so that the pictures will stay attached to the magnet when the children play.

  4. Step 4

    Create a family tree type decoration using construction paper on your refrigerator. Show your children how all of your family members connect using the family tree visual aid. Distinguish between the children's maternal and paternal family members.

  5. Step 5

    Put up letters of the alphabet onto your refrigerator and teach your child how to spell mom, dad, grandma, uncle or aunt. Let them using phonetic spelling to try to spell the names all by themselves.
