If you have ever had the pleasure of tasting Mayan ice cream, Mayan hot chocolate or authentic Mayan cuisine, you may have already guessed some of the classic ingredients of Mayan coffee. While the traditional means of brewing coffee are rather long and messy, you can now make an authentic cup of Mayan coffee with your coffee pot of drip cone.

From Quick Guide: Coffee Break
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coffee beans
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Cayenne
  • Unsweetened chocolate powder
  • Milk
  • Sweetener (optional)
  • Sweet, dark chocolate chunks (optional)
  1. Step 1

Choose your favorite coffee beans and grind as normal. For extra measure, select an authentic Mayan coffee bean. Many Mayan coffee producers practice free trade with part of the earnings going to support indigenous farmers. A mindful purchase can make you feel that much better about your delicious cup of joe.

  2. Step 2

Prepare to brew your coffee as usual, placing your grinds in your coffee maker, pot or drip cone. For every 1/4 cup of ground coffee, add 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. of cinnamon, a 1/4 tsp. of cayenne and as much ground unsweetened chocolate as you like.

  3. Step 3

Brew your coffee as normal. While your coffee is brewing, heat milk in a separate pot over low heat. Stir occasionally checking the temperature to make sure that it does not scald or burn. Use any kind of milk you like; however, whole milk is more traditional, and often tastes better.

  4. Step 4

Pour your brewed coffee into a mug and top off with heated milk. Sweeten if desired, sip and enjoy one spicy cup of Mayan coffee. For an extra touch when serving guests, garnish with a chunk of sweet dark chocolate.
