How to Clean Silver

Nothing adds a more distinguished touch when entertaining than the use of silver accessories. Silver adds a touch of class that ordinary stainless steel can't. That is, unless it's covered in unsightly tarnish. Never fear--there's an easy way to rid yourself of that ugly tarnish before your guests arrive. And you can do it using common household items.

    Things You'll Need

    • Aluminum foil
    • Hot water
    • Table salt
    • Baking soda
    • Large pan
    • Soft cloth
      • 1

Measure a length of aluminum foil to cover the bottom of the pan. Place the foil in the pan.

      • 2

Arrange the silver pieces on the foil so they're all touching the foil. Every piece of silver needs to touch the foil.

      • 3

Heat water, enough to completely cover the silver pieces. Add a small amount of salt to the water as it's heating.

      • 4

Add a cup of baking soda to the hot salt water solution.

      • 5

Pour the water, salt and baking solution over the silver pieces. Make sure all the silver pieces are still in contact with the aluminum foil.

      • 6

Allow the silver to soak in the solution for approximately 30 minutes. You can watch as the tarnish melts off.

      • 7

Remove the silver pieces and buff them dry with a soft cloth. Notice how even the hard to reach places are now clean and tarnish free.

    Tips & Warnings

    • This method is effective in removing the tarnish from any etched designs that are difficult to clean.

    • Use caution when adding the baking soda. When it mixes with the hot water, it may bubble over.
