An arbor provides a nice entry into a garden or other outdoor space. It is a wonderful place for flowers to climb and grow on. It is fairly simple to build your own arbor to specifically meet your own garden's needs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Wood saw
  • 4 2 x 4 inch posts, 8 feet length
  • 1x1 inch wood
  • Lattice
  • Electric screwdriver/drill
  • Screws
  • Wood stain
  • Paintbrush
  • Shovel
  • Gravel
Step1
Design your arbor to meet your needs. Measure the width and height that you want your arbor. Traditional arbors are about 8 feet tall. Consider the type of sides you will have, as well they way that you want the top to be. Using pre-made lattice gives roses a place to climb and can save time.
Step2
Cut your four side posts to the correct size. Then cut your top connecting pieces--these run perpendicular to the garden path and should be the width of your arbor. Cut the pieces that will connect the two archways together to the specific size. If you are not using lattice, you should cut additional pieces for the sides.
Step3
Connect two posts together with one of the longer connecting posts. Repeat with the other standing posts. Use wood screws to connect it completely.
Step4
Begin connecting the two archways together with the shorter connecting pieces. Measure the distance you put between each connect piece. Match the two sides so that they mirror each other in height and distance from each other. If you are using pre-made lattice simply attach it by putting screws in pre-drilled holes.
Step5
Attach the overhead pieces to the top. These pieces should be evenly spaced. They will allow the ivy and other plants to grow safely in the summer.
Step6
Stain the arbor if it is necessary.
Step7
Dig 18 inch holes to secure your arbor. Add gravel to the bottom of the whole to protect the arbor from the moisture. Place the arbor in and tamp down the earth around it firmly.
